🚲 Red Flags to Avoid When Buying Bikes to Flip
A Free Guide from Flip My Bike
I've flipped thousands of bikes. I've made great money. I've also lost money on bikes I should've walked away from.
🚩 Red flags:
- Cracked rims
- Squeaky brakes
- Missing parts (wheels, shifters, etc.)
Cracked Frame or Fork
Why it's a trap: Expensive to fix properly (if fixable at all), and it's a liability when selling. Safety issues = lawsuits waiting to happen.
💡 Exception: Only buy if you can use the parts on other projects and is cheap enough. Remove: the frame or parts separately for profit. Know your buyers first.
Seized Bottom Bracket or Headset
What it is: Current trend (c100's, e-converted bikes etc.) but flooded market
Why it's a trap: Everyone's flipping them. Prices crash fast. You're competing with 50 other sellers.
🚩 Red flags:
- "No offers" in the description
- Listed for £300 reduced to 270
- Priced above current retail
- Seller argumentative or defensive
Bonus: Red Flags That Always Mean Walk Away
- ❌ Cracked frame or fork
- ❌ Seized seatpost (on cheap bikes)
- ❌ Missing major components (derailleurs, cranks, wheels)
- ❌ Seller can't explain where it came from (likely stolen)
